Hydro electric potential of India is assesses as 45 million KW. Of this, about 80% only has been exploited by the end of 1986. The Indian rivers can be divided into two categories as rain-fed and snow-fed rivers. The rain-led rivers are characterized by heavy discharge during the monsoon months (June to September), But the flow dwindles to a mere trickle during the summer. In the snow-fed rivers originating in the Himalayas, the perennial feed of snow reduces the wide variations of inflow to some extent.
Out of total river flows, 60 % contribution comes from the Himalayan rivers (Indus, Ganges, Brehmaputra), 15 % from the central Indian rivers (Narmada, Tapti, Mahanadhi) and the remaining from the southern rivers ( Godhavari, Krishna, kaveri ).
Installed hydro-electric capacity which was 1300 MW Below Independence, has been raised now to 25,000 MW is about 3 decades. This being a renewable source of energy, we need to give the highest possible priority for the development of hydel potential in the country
India’s first hydroelectric station was constructed in 1897 in Darjiling (then Darjeeling). In FY 1990, installed capacity for hydroelectric power was 18,000 megawatts. The country has a large economically exploitable hydroelectric potential, especially in the foothills of the Himalayas, but no large increase in capacity is predicted for the mid-1990s. Hydroelectric facilities have to be coordinated with other sources of electricity because seasonal and annual variations in rainfall affect the amount of water needed to turn the generators and consequently the amount of electricity that can be produced.
Hydroelectric power projects in India have not been without controversy.Indian Dams for irrigation and power generation have displaced people and raised the specter of ecological problems.
