Indoor Gardening Supplies Help the Kitchen Gardener
Most indoor gardening supplies are quite handy for an Indoor Garden of houseplants or the vegetable and herb garden. The space you have chosen for your plants or garden determines the type of indoor gardening supplies that will be needed. Some supplies are basic and others will depend on the type of garden you want.
All the surfaces that you plan on using for your indoor garden must be protected against water damage and the spillage of soil. Plastic trays can be used under plant containers; a sheet of flexible plastic or a drop cloth can be placed under stands or larger planters. The soil used should be of good quality and contain the nutrients the houseplants need for about eight to ten weeks. Plants that grow for a longer period of time will need some fertilization and a water-soluble type recommended for your particular plants should be used. You can also add compost or fish emulsion to the soil for added nutrients. The organic fertilizers give your fruits and vegetables much better flavor and are better for you and the man-made fertilizers contain high levels of minerals that houseplants or indoor garden plants need for growth. Because houseplants can absorb nutrients through its leaves there is a spray that can also be used.
The plant containers that you select need to have proper drainage and large enough for your plants. You do not want water to stand in the planters’ base because this can cause root rot. Tropical plants will do much better if they are placed in plastic containers because these planters retain humidity better than clay pots or terracotta pots. Purified distilled water is better to use for the plants because tap water may contain mineral deposits or pH levels that can cause damage to the plants. All of your houseplants and Indoor Gardens benefit from proper air circulation and you can achieve this placing them near windows or an oscillating fan set on its lowest setting. If you expose them to a direct air flow for too long a time they will probably dry out. Natural pesticides such as hot peppers, alcohol and dish soap used to control pests work best on your plants and they will keep your family and pets much safer.
Most plants need a plenty of sunlight in order to survive. For those of you living in areas of little sunlight, or during the darker winter months, grow lights can be used to supplement the natural light. Florescent lighting, for many years, has been used as a form of grow light. They are generally used for seeding or for the plants that need low light. More mature plants need much more light and the high intensity lights or HID’s are used now by many indoor gardeners. Some HID grow light systems can be suspended from ceiling hooks and work very well for plant groupings. Many of the houseplants will be able to survive if they are placed in an open area that receives indirect sunlight.
Another way to grow an indoor garden is through Hydroponics, gardening without the use of soil. Hydroponic Gardening supplies or hydroponic gardening kits are available in different sizes for your personal needs and are very easy and fast to establish with simple instructions. They are very popular today because no soil is needed and the process eliminates pests, disease and weeds.
A sturdy table or a plant stand on wheels is a great solution for moving your plants around as needed for extra sunlight. Using a plant work table or plant stand can be easier on your back because you can use a tall stool for sitting to maintain your garden. After working on a number of seedlings, transplanting plants into larger containers or just doing a little maintenance on them, by placing them on a mobile stand helps to move them to other areas of the home for the light they need.
Some other indoor gardening tools such as the hand rake and trowel can complete your gardening tools for your indoor gardens. You still need to keep watch for pests that many enjoy your plants even more than you do; it is always best to use a natural pesticide for the safety of everyone living in the home. Indoor gardening can be quite therapeutic for many people especially during the winter months. Your indoor gardening supplies are very important no matter the size of your indoor garden space.
