How is an Aquaponics Better than Hydroponics?
Whether or not one system is better than the other is a matter of opinion and what you expect to get out of it. But here are some advantages of aquaponics over hydroponics. Hydroponic Gardens have become very popular, for some of the same reasons as aquaponics. You can grow a lot of plants in little space, without the need for fertile land or the labor of working the land.
One of the disadvantages of hydroponics is, you have to add fertilizer to the system. This is often from chemical fertilizer. There are also organic fertilizers, but how organic they really are is another debate for another time. There is the expense of the fertilizer and it needs to be maintained at proper levels.
This creates a constant chore. If there is not enough, you have to add some, and then you have to know what elements are lacking or whether there is too much. If there is too much, you have to flush some of the water out, which creates the problem of disposing of the water and the chemicals in it. Even if you don’t mind buying and dealing with the fertilizer, this method does not sit well with many organic gardeners and people who want food that is organic.
Aquaculture, which is the process of growing fish, has the opposite problem. With aquaculture, one of the biggest challenges is getting the wastes that the fish produce out of the system and disposing of it. Hydroponics has the challenge of where to get the nutrients that the plants need. It just turns out that these fish wastes are just what the plants need. So it becomes natural to combine the two systems.
Aquaponics is more of a complete system than hydroponics and aquaculture. It basically takes the negatives of both systems and uses them to make a more complete natural cycle that becomes a benefit to both systems. The fish wastes are converted to nutrients by naturally occurring bacteria in the water. This feeds the plants, while the plants clean the water for the fish.
Instead of buying fertilizer, you buy fish food, or grow your own. If you buy the fish food it will cost more than the fertilizer would, but the production of fish more than covers the cost of the food. If this were not the case, the Fish Farming that produces much of our fish would not be profitable.
Aquaponics is a system that will take care of itself more than hydroponics. It is a system that is more natural and most would argue it is more organic. With this type of system, you will know that your produce and fish are both truly organically grown.
Aquaponic Systems are very simple to set up and can be very inexpensive. This aquaponics how to guide can show you step by step how to set up your own system.
